Matthew 21:12–13 (NLT): “Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out all the people buying and selling animals for sacrifice. He knocked over the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those selling doves. He said to them, ‘The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves!’”
This passage shows Jesus’ fierce defense of holiness and reverence in God’s presence. The Temple, meant for prayer and worship, was being misused for selfish gain. Similarly, our hearts—God’s dwelling place—must not be filled with sin, greed, or hypocrisy. When we allow sin to take root, we risk Jesus “flipping our tables,” confronting and correcting us in love. We should daily examine our hearts, seeking purity, humility, and obedience, so that we remain a true house of prayer, not a place where sin is tolerated. Avoiding the need for correction honors Christ and welcomes His peace instead of His discipline.
